Remembering John Havlicek
The NBA family mourns the loss of John “Hondo” Havlicek, one of the greatest players in NBA history. Havlicek played all of his 16 NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics, winning eight championships; only two players, teammates Bill Russell (11) and Sam Jones (10) have won more. Havlicek revolutionized the “sixth man” role for the Celtics, as he earned election into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984 after a stellar career that included 13 All-Stars, 4 All-NBA First Team selections and a Finals MVP in 1974. Named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players, Hondo has been immortalized for his clutch steal of the inbounds pass in the closing seconds of Game 7 of the 1965 Eastern Conference championship, with Johnny Most’s famous call “Havlicek stole the ball!” marking it forever in NBA lore
